Departure

This excellent holiday has left us not simply refreshed but furnished with an easy Gallic charm. We are wearing our clothes differently, are washing much less frequently, and have started smoking again.

Yesterday in gale force winds we cycled aside vast juggernauts on our way back to Arles, but tant pis, we had done just short of 400k and were almost past caring, and our tanned and sculpted legs weren't about to let us down this late in the day. Pistons of power.

Last night provided a wonderful but modestly priced supper, marred only by the fact that the man at the next table collapsed and had to be attended to by ambulance, causing a most irritating draught at our table as he and his concerned relatives went in and out of the restaurant like they owned the place. He recovered and, to our surprise, finished his food.

Back to the hotel for a few games of pool accompanied by whisky poured by a teenage bar tender who thought a measure was the same as a large glass of wine. This bonus was offset by a car being set alight outside the hotel overnight and Provencal youths pelting James's shutters with rocks at 3am.

We abandoned the sharing rooms strategy after a couple of harmless incidents on Saturday night. This allowed the other two some well earned sleep whilst James took the brunt of the 'Provence Spring of 2012'.

Now the airport and back home, still geezers, still a bit fat, but feeling much better for these last great seven days.

La rage

Can you get rabies from an infected dog licking you? Julian has this particularly on his mind after an uninvited and frankly quite surreal encounter this morning. The mutt pursued us vigorously over a kilometre, and found Julian's leg to be his tasty reward.
Some 65 kms of speedy cycling followed, passing vast gorges and tree lined B roads, the thought of a fine supper and a course of 6 painful abdominal injections for Julian our happy travel companions.
We have definitely got more efficient at cycling on this holiday, but as for fitness? This will be for our wives to decide. Upon on our return. Brace yourselves please, ladies.

Thoughts of retirement

After a strenuous morning climb up the valley to the Col de Fontaube, in the shadow of the snow-tipped Mont de Ventoux, we enjoyed a fast descent down a deserted winding hillside road and are now holed up having coffee in a beautiful village called Savaillon. Gorgeous old church, picturesque cottages in provencal pastels with weathered clay tile roofs. Plotting future summer holidays and retirement..

A hard morning's work

A tough climb up to Gordes, and a heartbreak climb from there up to the Cote de Senanque. Then a long downhill.. and a killer 3km climb to the top of the ridge overlooking Venasque (the lovely village in the pic). Now having a well-earned steak (sans Julian's "non-you" frites) and a bottle of local rose.

We're all Francais now

The boys are showing true commitment to the cause. In the car soon after 5am. Coffee and bacon butty & then onto the easyjet flight for a game of monopoly. Naturally the property developer was first to go bankrupt. Now in Marseilles, negotiating the intricacies of the SNCF ticketing system en route to Marseilles. Beautiful weather as we wait at the gare, looking (in vain, thus far) for the first bière blonde of the trip.
